Practical Brief: To create a series of images which display an emotion.
Visual Brainstorm
To begin my practical brief of creating a series of images which display an emotion, I decided to create a visual collage of images which have inspired my thoughts of where I shall take my digital responses. Below is a diverse collection of images which includes the work of photographers including Cyril Lagel and Matthew Halstead
Experimental Collection:
For my first digital response to my practical brieg aim of creating a series of images which display an emotion, I decided to experiment in the studio with various different types of facial expressions to get a grounding in this topic area. I chose to use the studio because I wanted to focus on expression singley as later I shall investigate and research further of using a natural background: this set was purely experimental.
Original Images
Evaluation:
What went well: The models display varying emotions which appear exaggerated and obvious. It is clear that the laughing photographs convey emotion more convincingly in comparison to the other emotions displayed due to the genuine expression on each model's face; thus it seems that natural methods result in a better outcome as opposed to unnatural methods. I have found that the use of the studio allows sole focus on the expression as opposed to a crowded setting; however I am going to experiment with a non-studio setting to discover which gives the outcome of a better photograph.
Even better if: To improve my set of images I believe I need to think more about the composition of my models and their body language. The photographs where the models are looking at the camera seem less successful because they seem staged: the models appear to be focused on having their photo taken rather than displaying a genuine and natural emotion. Also, the sad images appear to work better when the model was looking down as she appeared to convey a reflective emotion. Also, there is a slightly blurred image of the dark haired model crying, this image appears quite emotive possibly because it was blurred and therefore doesn't convey a stark outlined, fake image.
What's next: Next I am going to think about the setting of my models and I am going to try to identify whether this is better at provoking an emotion within the viewer as opposed to a setting with a plain background.

Digital Response: Rosie Hardy
For my digital response to Rosie Hardy I took photographs of my model in a natural water setting: a water fountain. I used a pillow to show that I incorporated Hardy's ideas. I alternated between colour and black and white settings on my camera when taking the photo's; however when editing I transformed the coloured images into black and white ones. I used this technique because I think the photographs worked better in this setting; they look mysterious, slightly creepy and in some photos she even looks deformed. They do not necessarily create a sad or intimidating effect like my previous set, but instead quite an unpleasant and uncomfortable set of images - which seems to work more powerfully with regards to initiating an emotion within the viewer.

What went well: The images do not necessarily create a sad or intimidating effect like my previous set, but instead quite an unpleasant and uncomfortable set of images. Having asked several people about the photographs and how it makes them feel all said that they were uncomfortable to look at; the murky water and black and white effect are vital elements in creating this.
Things to think about: To improve my set of photographs I think I should have tried different ideas in the water rather than just a single approach. For example I could have used a piece of cloth with my model in the water: this could have created a more diverse set of images.
What's next: For my next set of photographs I am going to look at a completely opposite theme of expression which is 'expressionless.' I am deciding to photograph this type of image because I want to see how different forms of expression can be portrayed.

Digital Response: Alex Prager
For my digital response to Alex Prager I photographed my models in a supermarket. I chose a supermarket setting because food shopping is more often than not an activity which involves people looking expressionless, bored and mundane. With the influence of Prager's work I only used female models because traditionally the woman/wife would get the shopping and therefore I wanted to create a house wife effect. Similarly to Prager's work I made sure something in my shot was brightly coloured to create a cinematic effect, however I used brightly coloured settings instead of brightly coloured clothes. The coloured cereal boxes and brightly lit isles create a fake looking atmosphere; you can almost imagine the beeps of the check-outs when viewing the photographs.I used a selection of shot types which included close-ups, head shots, full body shots and mid shots. I also looked at the angle at which I was taking the photograph as I believe this affects the image hugely, although I tried side shots and corner shots I believe that the full on straight headshot worked best.

Evaluation:
What went well: I think the composition of my models in the photographed illustrated the 'expressionless' theme well as in the majority of images they appeared lost or not really there. I worked with different camera angles to create a varying set of photographs.
Things to think about: It seems as though the photographs appear slightly empty; as though something is missing. Therefore, to improve this collection of images I could have focused solely on the expression as opposed to the setting as it seems that their expressions got lost within the busy atmosphere; however, I did want to experiment with setting and expression rather than just taking studio shots with a blank background.
What's next: For my next set of images I am going to focus solely on the expression of the model and therefore will take the photographs in the studio. Instead of having a loud setting I shall have a plain black or white background.

Alex Prager: Development
For my next set of images I have decided to develop my research and understanding of the photographer Alex Prager. I have already completed a digital response to Prager but instead of focusing on the setting and facial expression to create a successful outcome, I have decided to focus solely on the facial expression and thus have used the studio to create this set. My model is crying in the shots and I believe this works powerfully to create an emotive set. The images which have been taken from above make her look vulnerable and helpless - this could provoke feelings of unhappiness, guilt and sadness within the observer. I am going to conduct my photographs in the studio because despite Prager's photographs having a busy background I want to focus on the expression created rather than setting and props.

Evaluation:
What went well: Having used the studio rather than an outside background has bought focus to my images and they are very much based on facial expression rather than setting and atmosphere. I think this works well as the shadows on her face and the tears are very visible - the viewer can look nowhere except for her face. As I took head-shots only her expression is magnified and the images seem very high in contrast. The use of a high contrast setting enhances the tears and the airbrushing of my edited photographs connect to Prager's film stills completely. The airbrushed effect makes her look quite artificial but I think this works well because she looks so immaculate.
Even better if: I have noticed whilst editing the photographs that a staged setting does not work as well as a natural setting in this case, the photographs do not appear genuine, but staged and manufactured. As my task is to initiate an emotion within the viewer I do not believe the set was successful in this sense. I shall highly consider the use of a studio setting in future developments.
What's next: Next I shall take photographs again in the studio but I want to see how clothes can affect the emotion being conveyed rather than a simply head-shot. I will therefore create different scenario's for my model and photograph these. I hope this will allow my set to be a more diverse collection.

Cindy Sherman: Digital Response
For my next set of photographs I decided to research the photographer Cindy Sherman and her collection named 'Untitled Film Stills.' I decided to look at this particular collection as her images convey four very different characters but using the same model: herself. This interests me as I find it interesting how a single individual can convey several different emotions through appearance and clothing rather than through their facial expression solely. Therefore within this set I solely focused on getting my model to present a different character through both her clothes and her facial expression. For my four different themes I shot a distressed public sector office worker, a young curious child, a seductive young adult and a traditional daughter who helps her mother with the house work.

Edited Images
Evaluation:
What went well: The four different themes work well and I believe that the range of close-ups and mid-shots create a diverse set. I do believe that the images illustrate emotion well to an extent; for example the images of the model smoking a cigarette appear almost depressing, whilst the images of the seductive young adult have been constructed around the angle and position of the shot; for example most are shot from above which allows the model to gaze up.
Even better if: To make this set even better I could have thought more about the camera angle and how this affects the impact of the photograph. For example, the photographs of the young child could have worked better if i had taken shots from above as they could have made her look more vulnerable and innocent - like an adult looking down on a child. However to an extent I believe that I did do this, as with the example of the seductive young adult.
What's next: Next I will focus on two themes of dress and use a setting which is not the studio. I want to provoke illustrate an emotion through the use of a natural setting as well as the facial expression as I think this will work more effectively in creating an emotive piece because it will seem more genuine.

Cindy Sherman: Development
This collection of images focused on two themes solely: a working woman and a seductive woman. I chose these two themes in particular as I think they seem like polar opposites. Influences by Sherman's work I wanted to illustrate how one person can appear very differently in two separate roles and thus portraying different emotions. The expression of my model is quite daydreamy in the seductive photographs which I think works well with her setting as it looks as though she doesn't want to be there, perhaps. In the other photographs she appears curious and inquisitve; this is also reflected in the prop usage of letters and documents.

Evaluation:
What went well: I believe that the model in a setting works better than in a studio for this particular set. The images are in black and white with a high contrast and this makes her facial expression stand out more as it is not lost a midst bold colours. I left one image in colour as I think it appeared quite powerful on this occasion. I find that the setting suits the mood of the photograph and works well with the clothing choice: this is therefore a successful development in comparison to my previous set whereby the setting did not match the props and clothing of my model.
Even better if: I do not feel as thought the images convey powerful emotions which create interesting photographs; and thus I am going to instead work solely on expression as a I have done in previous sets.
What's next: Next, I am going to focus purely on the expression of my subjects, however I may use a group of five or six people rather than a single person and see if emotion is more successfully created in this way.

Laughing Group: Digital Response
For my next set of photographs I decided to capture natural laughter in the studio. I used laughter for the emotion as I believe this is one of the most powerful emotions without having an anecdote from those in the images. I used the studio as I wanted to capture the expressions of my subjects without diversions of props; hence I had the model's wear white or black t-shirts to create a minimalistic affect which would lead to no distraction from the emotion being conveyed.

Evaluation:
What went well: I am very happy with this set of images as I believe they convey strong happy emotions. The laughter was easy to create as all the models are friends and thus this is natural laughter rather than staged. I definitely believe that using a group of people is better than a single person, in this case: it seems to have a larger impact and higher intensity of emotion.
Even better if: To make my images better I think I could have used a different lens or incorporated props. For example, I could have used a fish eyed lens which would create an interesting distorted view to the images that may have made them look funny. Also, I could have asked my models to do the same pose, like in the images above, this comes across as very uniform but is effective. However, I did want to try and tease out each individuals personality rather than making each person look the same.
What's next: Next, I am going to use two people rather than a larger group because I want the laughing to appear very genuine and I think this is more achievable with a small group as it was difficult to have everyone laughing at the same time with four or five people. Also I want to use a natural setting to achieve a more genuine set of images as the studio does make the photographs seem quite fake.

Development:
I decided to crop some of the images so that I could compare whether they worked better as a group image or as a single photograph. However, after cropping them I have concluded that they look better as a group photograph as the crop makes the image too small and concise, also in the group photograph the laughter appears more effective with lots of varying expressions whereas singly they appear slightly lost.
Laughing Group: Development
For my next set of photographs within this topic I shall develop the idea of a laughing group in a natural setting to create genuine expressions. I am going to aim to create a collection of photographs which will appear spontaneous. I have looked at the work of Elaine Constantine who creates this type of photograph, and her images will definitely inspire my outcome.
Constantine uses young energetic teenagers featured in her photographs to create vibrant, typical and laughable outcomes which illustrate strong emotions.

Evaluation:
What went well: I strongly believe that having my models in a natural setting is far more convincing and life-like as opposed to my studio shots. The natural scenario's also add to the authenticity of the photographs. The edited images have increased in saturation levels, this makes them much brighter and colourful which allows the photographs to seem warm and friendly - this adds to the emotion and emotiveness of the photographs.
Even better if: I think an even larger group could have worked well rather than two people. However I believe with two models the images are more intimate and refined rather than a big group which may seem disconnected and loose knit thus decreasing the emotion displayed in the photograph. Also, with using only two people it was more likely that I would capture both people laughing whereas with a large group there was always the possibility one person may not be laughing thus not contributing to the shot.
What's next: Next I am going to complete a digital response using two models against a plain background but with bright colours in the shot to add emotion through the effects I can apply to the photograph. The reason I have decided to complete this against a plain background is because I want to discover how well the bright colours work before completing a similar response in a natural background.

Development
For this next digital response my focus is on expression and the colours in the shot; I want to use bright greens and reds to illustrate the emotion which I am portraying: happiness through colour as well as the obvious expression. I found in my previous set that colour can be extremely effective in creating an emotive piece and thus this is an area which I am focusing on in these final photographic sets.
Original Images
Editing Technique:
To edit the photographs for this digital response I used Adobe Photoshop CS5 whereby I adjusted specific effects. Firstly I opened the image and duplicated the layer so that I could work on top of the original image without making changes that were irreversible. I then adjusted the contrast and saturation of the image so that the coloured tops were extremely bright because this is one of the features that I was drawing on within this set. I then used the eraser tool to remove the adjustments off of the model's skin as it appeared orange and off-colour; this allowed brightly coloured tops which look natural and not edited. Lastly, I used a surface blur because I wanted the model's faces to appear smooth so that no attention was drawn away from the focus: laughter and bright colours, I also thought that the surface blur gave the photo a better finish which looked more professional than without.

Evaluation:
What went well: I am pleased with the effect that the brighly saturated colours have in the photographs: I have discovered that much expression and emotion can be displayed through this; this is particularly effective with the emotion of laughter as bright colours can portray happiness.
Even better if: I don't think the plain background is very effective in the above images; it seems unnatural and slightly dull. I think that if I had used a bright natural background I would have had a more successful outcome.
What's next: Next is my final development whereby I shall conduct a set of images with three models that will be set in a natural bright setting where the individuals will be dressed in bright tops and will possibly be using colourful props to illustrate the emotion of happiness.

Laughing Group: Final Development
For my final development to my practical brief of creating a series of images that display an emotion, I have decided to create a highly saturated bright set of images which play on bright colours hugely to create an emotive effect. I have had my subjects wearing bright coloured tops: green, blue and red, with these they are holding baloons which are brightly coloured that they'll play around with: throwing them up in the air or posing with them whilst laughing. Again, because my models are friends it was easy to create genuine laughter as opposed to false emotions which may not be as effective in this particular case. I used a big green bush for my background because it is a natural scene which consists of bright green shades that can be edited on photoshop to create eye-capturing images. I have concluded throughout this project that displaying an emotion naturally works best in a natural environment and hence why I have incorporated this in my final set of images. I have decided to incorporate balloons into this final set because they are often associated with happiness and joyful occasions such as birthdays, this imagery will merge with the rest of the image to produce a successful outcome.

Conclusion/Final Decision:
The photograph which I have selected to be my final piece for my project of 'creating a series of images which display an emotion' I have decided to use the image of the three models throwing balloons in the air and laughing at the same time. The reason why I have chosen this photograph is because I have noticed that it consists of highly saturated colours which combined with the expressions on each models face creates a highly effective emotive piece. After editing the photo in Photoshop I concluded that the brightly contrasting colours created a bold and eye-capturing image which makes the observer feel 'happy.' I have asked several different people how the photograph made them feel when they looked at it, each stated that it made them laugh or smile and thus in addition to showing an emotive photograph I have managed to provoke an emotion inside the viewer which was not my direct aim in this project but is a successful extra achievement for my work.
This final piece has been highly influenced through my research of varying photographers including Elaine Constantine and Alex Prager. Although their photographs may not be directly reflected in my outcome they have influenced it hugely. With Constantine, I have noticed that clothes and props make a huge difference to the emotion and presence that the photograph holds; this is the reason I opted to use both balloons and brightly coloured tops as these contribute to the emotion of happiness. With regards to Prager I have incorporated her ideas of using colours which make the individual stand out against it's background. In this case I have done this through the use of brightly coloured tops which contrast starkly against the dark green garden bush. In Prager's work which I explored earlier it was apparent that the bright colours which the model held had a large impact for the photograph as a whole and hence why I took this idea of board.
In conclusion, I am extremely happy with my final piece as it displays an effective emotion that is shown through both expression, setting and props. To present this final outcome I shall display it in a white frame and enlarge it to size 24x30 because I believe this will create a big impact when put into a white frame that will reflect the light feeling and happiness of the image.
I also printed a development piece which was one that I conducted in the studio on a tripod which can be seen in a previous set. I chose this photograph in particular as I like the way me and the other two models are staggered as it shows depth and appears more genuine. I decided to print a studio image as well as an image in a natural setting to illustrate and contrast the difference between a natural and unnatural setting outcome. It is clear that both illustrate genuine laughter, however the ones outside seem much more realistic due to the bright colourful, everyday setting. I shall print the development piece on a scale of 18x24 inches and shall display this in a black frame with a black background to bring out the colours inside, as if I were to use a white frame it may appear washed out because of the black and white colouring of the photograph.

Second Brief: To create a set of images that display dramatic emotions which are illustrated through facial expressions.
For the second brief for my unit 3 practical work I have decided to keep with the theme of emotive portraiture, however within this section I shall focus on conveying a fake, staged and film-like emotion as opposed to a more genuine display of emotion.
Psycho Film: Digital Response
For my first set of photographs in my second brief I have decided to look at the film Psycho and its famous shower scene. I have chosen this film in particular due to the extreme expressions pictured as she goes from calm to screaming. I thought that this experimentation set would be a good indication in directing my thoughts towards what ideas I shall refine and pursue towards a final outcome.

What went well: What went well in this set of photographs is that it has inspired me to pursue a false, dramatic set of images which display exaggerated emotion.
Even better if: I am not pleased with this set of photographs because I do not believe the emotions are the best which I could have captured. In many of the photographs the model does not appear shocked and frightened for their life but instead slightly shocked. In my next sets I am going to ensure that the outcome is one which I desire as opposed to a set which only half represents what I was trying to accomplish.
What's next: Next I am going to focus solely on close-ups of different individuals displaying various exaggerated emotions which shall vary from shocked to upset. I am going to get each model to perform several different expressions and the expressions which they convey best is the one which I will then focus on to get two successful images from. This approach will ensure that I get the best possible outcome for each models response.

Second Brief
For my second brief I have decided to pursue a strand which I experimented with in my first brief which involved having a very fake, airbrushed image showing staged and false expression. I want to use three different models to experiment with which model conveys a specific expression best, after I have concluded with an answer to this question I am considering completing a group photograph with each model displaying the expression which they are best at. I am aiming over all for three or four images which are polished, airbrushed and have a false presence about them; this is the opposite to my first practical brief.
First Collection
For my first digital response to this second strand I have decided to use my model in the studio with shot types that will purely focus on her facial expression as opposed to body language and costume. I have discovered in my previous project that expression can be carried solely through the facial expression and features; however as opposed to before where I looked at exaggerated expressions here I am simply focusing upon subtle genuine emotional expressions which will range from laughter to despair. I have decided to use the studio setting because I want to be able to control the lighting on my model's face: I don't want shadows of lightness and darkness all over, my approach is far more stripped back.
Editing Steps: (click to enlarge)
To edit this collection of photographs I first noted which expressions worked best on this particular model: this was sadness. I then selected the two best photographs displaying this emotion and then edited them in Adobe Photoshop CS5. Firstly, I opened up the image and used the spot healing brush to get rid of any blemishes and imperfections on the model's skin. Next, I adjusted the brightness and contrast of the photograph as a whole; my aim was to adjust the brightness and contrast of the eyes to be as dark as possible whilst at the same time allowing them to appear realistic. After this, I used the eraser tool to remove the highly saturated contrasting colour which covered the face as I want the models face to look dewy and colourless; I want the colours in the photograph to reflect her mood: unhappy and drained. I erased all of the brightness and contrast which I had added except from her eyes which remained deeply black and stark. Next I added a surface blur to the image so that it had an airbrushed effect where her skin looks flawless and smooth; I adjusted this to the amount which I thought was enough: I had not predetermined the amount of blur I was going to use because I think every photograph is different and thus needs different adjustments. Lastly I adjusted the vibrance and saturation of the image so that it consisted of bright light colours which would create a stark contrast with her eyes.

Evaluation:
What went well: I am pleased with the outcome of this set of photographs as I managed to capture two photographs which perfectly illustrate the expression of sadness and despair. I find her expression to be subtle; thus effective and convincing due to how genuine her emotion appears. I have found that the studio setting of a white background worked well because there is no distraction away from her expression; also being able to artificially control the lighting proved effective in the outcome of the photograph as the light spread evenly across her face. I also really like the effect of the dark black eyes as a lot of emotion and expression is usually carried through the eye features and thus this emotion was exaggerated, enhancing the expression as a whole. The airbrushing technique also has proved effective with her appearing slightly doll like and compressed as an individual with no imperfections except how she is feeling inside.
Even better if: To improve this set of photographs I would have wanted to use a black background to notice the which colour background worked better. However, because her eyes are intensely black I feel that with a black background the exaggeration from the eyes would have been reduced and not as effective as they would have 'blended in' to an extent.
What's next: Next I am going to use a different model in the studio setting which displays varying types of expression so that I can decide which they display best. This will help me come to my eventual conclusion and final outcome which will consist of a set of photographs with each showing their most effective expression.

Second Collection: Development
For my next development within this strand I used another model in similar conditions to construct a response based purely around facial expression. I had her compose her face into several different expressions including shock, laughter and sadness, amongst others. However, the two which I selected were laughter as I believe that this emotion was conveyed most effectively. I linked in the work of Alex Prager through my refining techniques of airbrushing; this technique is a replica of the technique which I used in my first development.

What went well: I believe that the two selected images are effective in what they are trying to convey; an expression which seems doll-like: they also both appear genuine which is an important attribute to this strand. The technique which I used gave the exact effect which I wanted to illustrate which is completely airbrushed and false to an extent; I wanted her expression to look natural but the make-up and effect on the photograph to seem fabricated.
Even better if: To improve this set of photographs I could have experimented further with different angles. However, I wanted to solely focus on the face in itself as opposed to different angles which may defeat the aim of intrusive images.
What's next: Next, I am going to complete another set of images including different expressions to experiment with a model that can convey a different expression better than the previous sets. I shall then edit the image similarly to my previous two in reference to moving towards my final outcome.

Third Collection: Development
For my third development I completed photographs in a setting with a white background whereby I had my model complete various expressions in hope of finding an expression which she could convey best. Having found this I then focused on capturing two images which conveyed this particular emotion and expression most thoroughly.

What went well: What went well in this set of photographs was that I managed to capture an emotion which was conveyed mainly through her eye; I found this very effective in conveying emotion and this is something which I shall take on board with my next development. I also thought the use of the stark make-up was a striking way to illustrate her emotion: through the use of running mascara mainly. I am also pleased with the slight change in angle as this has created two diverse photographs; one with direct contact with the viewer and the other gazing into the distance. I find both of these to be powerful because when she is looking at the camera the observer may feel guilty to an extent, whilst when she is looking away it suggests that she is possibly thinking about what has made her cry; this makes the photograph quite intriguing.
Even better if: To improve this set of photographs I could have considered only photographing parts of her face, such as her eyes, alone. This could have given sole focus to her eyes which display the most emotion here. However, I want to focus on the whole of a facial expression in conveying emotion and thus I did not view this as a suitable action for the strand.
What's next: Next I am going to experiment with some self-portraits to discover whether this technique works effectively. I shall then select the best two photographs conveying an effective emotion different from the one's which I have already shown and then will edit them accordingly.

Fourth Collection: Development
In this fourth development collection I have taken a varied set of self portraits using a tripod. I displayed several different expressions including: curious, shocked, laughter and sadness. I conducted these photographs from different angles such as above and from a slight side angle. I found the expression which I could portray most convincingly and then attempted more shots at this until I had two slightly different photographs which illustrates the emotion.

What went well: I believe that I managed to convey a convincing shocked expression and I am pleased that I did this with two different photographs as opposed to two photographs which were similar. I am fond of the different angles that were used to capture the same emotion and I find that the different levels of the amount of expression create two different images; one if subtle shock whilst the other is exaggerated shock. I found that completing a self-porait response using a tripod was very useful as I was able to create the exact expression which I wanted due to my personal control.
Even better if: To improve this set of photographs I could have attempted to illustrate the emotion with more areas of my face; for example how I could show I was shocked through my mouth only. However, I have learnt from previous sets and my personal study dissertation that much emotion is often conveyed through the eyes and hence I wanted to reflect this largely in these few photographical images.
What's next: Next I am going to complete another response using a different model which will allow me to further my development in creating exaggerated expressions. This will provide me with a wide selection of photographs that I can then select my final pieces from.

Fifth Collection: Development
For my fifth development in response to my second brief I have set up studio with a fifth model that I had compose varying different emotions which I then selected the most effective two from. I firstly took a range of photographs illustrating different emotions and then refined the best expression by having her perform this again so that I could select the images from.

What went well: In this fifth set of photographs I believe what went well is that the models complexion is starkly lighter than her eye make-up and this brings focus to her eyes where much of the expression and emotion of confusion is displayed.
Even better if: To improve this set of photographs I could have experimented with a black background. Also, I could have developed different expressions as I don't find a 'confused' expression as interesting as some of the other expressions and emotions which I have previously illustrated.
What's next: Next shall be my final set of images whereby I shall complete a similar process to before and will photograph my final model completing a series of different expressions which I will then edit in Photoshop and present below.

Sixth Collection: Development
For my sixth collection I have taken photographs of my model against a white background where she composed her face into several different exaggerated and subtle emotions and expressions. I then selected the two most successful expressions which display the same emotion, each taken from a different angle which allows the duo to vary.

What went well: I am pleased with the effect that I have managed to create through photoshop as here the airbrushing seems fake but does not completely coat the face to an extent whereby her facial features are erased. However, I do not think the expression of 'anger' works as well as some of my other expressions in these collections. Although it is a subtle expression I don't think it is conveyed as well as other emotions.
Even better if: To improve this set of photographs I could have used a black background to reflect the dark emotion as opposed to a light background, I also could have tried to capture an angry expression which was more obvious; however this proved difficult without making the image look ridiculous.
What's next: Next I am going to select the photographs which I believe illustrate obvious emotion best and will print these on photographic paper for a final outcome.

Second Brief: Final Outcome
For my final outcome I have selected four photographs from the above sets which I decided were the best and most convincing and interesting to observe. The four which I selected each show a different emotion: shocked, sadness, upset and happiness. I decided on these because I thought they were the most exaggerated photographs which also appeared genuine to an extent; they clearly illustrate an emotion without making them appear ridiculous. Additionally, the effects created by Photoshop such as the airbrushing and darkening of the eyes are conveyed most effectively through these four images because I find that the four selected are those that convey emotion mostly through the eyes. I have found throughout that the eyes are what mainly convey emotion and thus because these four photographs do this best it is likely that the would be the most successful images.
I have printed my four images at a size 18x24 and will display them in black frames. I have chosen black frames because I don't want to draw away from the emotion shown on the face with a bright frame.
